History
Alaska Icefield Expeditions operates 3 dogsled tour camps in Southeast Alaska. They have two on the Juneau Icefield and one in the Sheep Creek Valley. The three camps have a total of 600 dogs producing close to 4000 lbs of dog waste every 3 days.
All the dog waste is picked up and placed in 55 gallon barrels and slung by helicopter to our ground facility and pumped. In prior years this waste would have ended up in the City’s treatment facility.
Our company’s wish is to be as environmentally responsible as possible. Starting in 2009 we began experimenting with a composting system developed by Haines Sanitation, Inc. in Haines, Alaska. The composting project was very successful. This year, Alaska Icefield Expeditions in partnership with Community Waste Solutions, a subsidiary of Haines Sanitation Inc., will compost half of our waste and sell to gardeners throughout Alaska as IditaGrow and IditaPoo.
By the end of the 2010 season we hope to have 100 percent of the waste generated composted. This compost has been tested in labs in California and Washington and has been shown to be an excellent soil additive and safe for all your gardening needs (flowers or vegetables).
